If you are one of the millions of people trying to get hired today, then it is time to raise your job interview skills to a higher level. You need to become an expert in the best job interview tactics available to give you an edge over the competition.

Applying for a job is not a game. These days, we all need to buckle down and look at the job hunt with a keen and strategic eye. Let us assume – for the sake of this article – that you are one fish in a pool of two hundred others who have applied for a position. Let us also assume that you are being granted an interview.

First of all, let’s get the obvious out of the way, and further assume that you and your one-hundred competitors already know the basics: dress approriately, brush your teeth before the interview, don’t chew gum, have additional copies of your resume, etc.

Now it’s time to make YOU stand out. We need a way to ensure that your prospective employer remembers YOUR interview above all the others (in a good way), and that YOU are the best fit for the position and the company?

Here are a few job interview tactics that will have you looking like a winner the moment you enter the room. You will begin by learning about the company, the key personnel, and what makes it tick. It doesn’t matter whether you have 30 years of expertise under your belt, of if you are a high-school student looking for your first part-time job, you need a solid understanding of what the company’s needs are and how you can meet those needs.

To be sure, your research will be more extensive if you are applying for a full-time computer programming position than if you are applying for a part-time after school position at the local ice-cream shop. Nonetheless, you will need to do this research regardless of the job level if you want to be the top candidate.

So, your first step is to locate and study the company website, and be sure you understand its mission, goals, and needs. If your target employer is a large firm, review as many reports you can find – annual reports, earnings reports, etc.

Secondly, scour the internet or local newspapers or industry journals for articles that show the company in a good light. Print one out (or clip one from the paper), and put it in a folder.

Then, spend some time writing out some important points that you learn from their website. Try to connect these points to how they might apply to the job you are interviewing for. Then, formulate relevant questions that can connect the job to something you discovered during your research. This way, when it is your turn to ask questions (i.e. when the interviewer asks if you have any questions), you are prepared with a thoughtful response.

When you enter the interview, the first thing to do (after being greeted and introduced), is to hand the interviewer the folder with the article or clippings that you found on the company. Explain that you found some great articles about the company, and thought they might like copies for their public relations file or reception area in case they didn’t already have a hard copy.

Right away, you come across as someone who is already part of the company. You fit in. You are a good match.

When it is your turn to ask questions, you are already prepared with a couple of relevant questions since you did your homework. For example, you might say, “Yes, I do have a question. I noticed in the company’s annual report that you recently launched an excellent outreach program to high schools throughout the state, encouraging young people to pursue careers in engineering and science. To what extent would my position be involved with that program?”

Again, even a young, entry level applicant can do this: Let’s say you are the high school student applying for the part-time ice-cream shop job.

If there is nothing already written or published about this particular shop, you can take a photo of the store on a beautiful day, print it out, and bring it to the interview saying, “I took this photo of the shop last week on that sunny day, and thought you might be able to use it on your website/brochure/etc…”

How many other high-school students applying for that job will do this? I’m guessing that you will be the only one who puts this much effort into getting a job.

No matter where you are in experience, this level of preparation and discussion shows the company that you are already looking at how to solve or address its needs. You are already showing that you are part of their team.

Despite all the advances in technology and communications these days, the traditional rules still hold when it comes to interview techniques that will get you hired.  Whether you’re applying to a global corporation or a small company, the most important part of an interview is that you have a winning presentation.  This is usually the key factor in determining whether you get the job.

Once you have created an effective resume and have sent your resume to prospective employers, the next step is to try and obtain an interview.  This can be done by phone or in person.  Chances are you will first meet an administrative assistant or receptionist.  This person could be the key to your future in terms of helping you to get an interview or providing information about the company, so remember to be polite and friendly.

Once an interview is scheduled, your personal appearance and behavior are critical factors which could decide whether your job search is successful. 

Here are 7 important steps to help you improve your interview techniques.

Interview Techniques #1 — Proper Preparation

To make sure you’re on time for the interview, find out ahead of time where the interview is and how to get there.  Give yourself plenty of time to get dressed and get there on time.  As a matter of courtesy, make sure your cell phone is turned off before the interview.

Plan to dress in a manner which is appropriate for the job.  Your appearance will determine the first impression the interviewer has of you.  Take care in your grooming before the interview, and be aware of your body language during the interview.  Good posture will help to give an overall good impression.

When you meet the interviewer, remember to look him or her in the eye and be prepared to return a handshake if offered.  A polite greeting and friendly smile are in order.  Only take a seat after it’s offered.  Thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you.    Keep your demeanor and comments positive.

As you’re being interviewed, answer all questions as honestly as possible.  Honesty and sincerity are both important interview techniques. Make your answers concise and not unnecessarily wordy.  Do your best to convey to the interviewer what type of employee you will be and what you will offer the company.  When asked about previous employers, stay as positive as possible.

If this is your first job, don’t be intimidated by your lack of experience.  Emphasize your skills and talents, and let the employer know that you are confident and eager to learn.

One of the most important interview techniques is to see through the eyes of the employer.  If you were the one doing the hiring, what qualities would you look for?  What benefit would the employer gain in hiring you?

Lastly, don’t be afraid to sell yourself, but at the same time avoid the appearance of over confidence.  Project an air of confidence without sounding like a know-it-all.

Interview Techniques #5 — Ask the Right Questions

Show the interviewer that you know the right questions to ask.  Express an interest in knowing exactly what your responsibilities will be.  If you come across an interviewer who does all of the talking, don’t be intimidated.  Politely try to ask questions which will give you the chance to discuss your qualifications for the job.

Interview Techniques #6 — The Wrap Up

As the interview comes to a close, make sure that you’ve covered all the important points.  This is not the time to ask about salary and benefits.  Save those questions for the job offer or follow up interview.

Summarize you strengths and skills and re-emphasize your positive traits.  Find out what the next steps are in the interview and job decision process.  Thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you and make sure to leave a final good impression.

After the interview, another of the important interview techniques is to follow up with a thank you note to each person who interviewed you.  Thank him or her for their time and for giving you the opportunity to apply for a job.

Proven Job Interview Techniques to Seal the Deal and Land Your Dream Job Bartending

Your mouth is dry, your palms are sweaty, your heart is beating so fast it feels like it’s going to pop out of your chest!

Sound familiar?

Just a common case of interview anxiety. For most people, interviews are very uncomfortable. The mere thought of them causes anxiety and nervousness… and this is the last impression you want to give a bar manager during an interview!

The competition is fierce in this industry, so why do you always “bomb” during the interview?

You probably walk out of them and think of all the things you could have said, how you could have answered certain questions, but this doesn’t matter, it’s how you perform during the interview that gets you your dream job.

There’s already enough things out of your control that you’re competing with, so why work against yourself?

Let me show you how to be in your full power during the interview, so that scoring your dream job and leaving the competition in the dust comes easily and effortlessly to you!

Dress The Part

Dress as though you already work there, give the interviewer a rock solid visual of what you’d look like behind the bar… this makes it more probable that they’d consider you for the job.

Remember also that this is the service industry. Unless you are applying to a five star hotel, there’s no reason to show up in a suit and tie for the interview. This is trying too hard. Wear the same type of attire the employees wear.


Before the interview, take a few nice, deep breaths to calm and relax yourself. This helps get oxygen to your brain and also releases tension. It can be a painful process to be seated and waiting to be interviewed by the employer, this will ease that pain and clear your head so you can “knock ‘em dead”.

Be Yourself

Now believe me when I say this is easier said then done. It’s much harder to “be yourself” than you think. I think one of the biggest reason people “bomb” in the interview is because they’re preoccupied with who they’re “supposed” be, they are too concerned with what kind of image they are portraying. We know we’re being mildly “interrogated” and that makes many people self-conscious and nervous.

Just speak, just answer the questions as you would during a conversation with your closest friend. That’s when your “best” self comes forth, that’s when who you truly are shines through.

This person will always be better than the person you’re “trying” to be.

Make Eye Contact

If you can’t bring yourself to make eye contact with the interviewer, you can forget about getting your dream bartending job.

When being asked a question, if your eyes look to the floor or to the side when answering it gives the impression you’re not telling the truth for starters, and it also represents a lack of confidence, which isn’t something you find among good bartenders.

Look the person in the eye when speaking and more importantly, when listening. This is easier said then done if you’re in the habit of not doing it, becoming aware of it is all takes.

Firm Handshake

Be conscious of your handshake. I cannot stress this enough! A weak handshake gives a terrible first impression of you. Again, as with poor eye contact, it represents a lack of confidence. This is not what you want to do to kick start the interview.

A nice, firm, handshake gives an excellent first impression and will start the interview off on a strong note. No matter what you have to do, remember to do this.

Act As If

There’s no better remedy out there than “acting as if”. Act as if you are the best bartender in the world. Walk into the interview with that attitude and you’ll be surprised at the kind of energy you feel and the outlook you have.

You’ll tap into raw genius that you never thought you had. You’ll answer questions elegantly and give the interviewer exactly what they want to hear.

Be Direct

I hardly ever watch TV, but one show I simply cannot miss is The Apprentice. I make it a point to watch this show. I mean, how often do you get see a billionaire in action? Being able to see the behavior and demeanor of Donald Trump is my sole reason for tuning in.

One thing he preaches in his books and practices in his life is being direct. This is a must during a bartending job interview!

The opposite, rambling and excessive talking, is a sign of nervousness so avoid it at all costs. A lot of people actually are nervous during the interview so rambling is a common thing. But when you are as direct and to-the-point as possible, this reflects self-confidence and certainty, when you do this you will stand out above and beyond every other applicant.

Do not confuse “direct” with “rude”. When answering a question, tell the interviewer exactly what they need to know, without a life story which only you care about. The interviewer will appreciate this, so much in fact, that you’ll get your dream job.

You Ask

This may sound like a shock to you, but it’s not the interviewer that should be asking all the questions during an interview. The way you want to approach an interview is… you are interviewing them!

By doing this, you may find that they’re not the best place to work for after all. You may find out it’s not a good fit for you.

For example, the requirement may be for you to pool your tips after each shift. A definite thing to avoid in a potential employer! I explain this, along with everything else you must avoid when “screening” employers in Bartending Secrets Exposed.

Have a written list of questions to ask the interviewer. The one who asks the questions is in control, this is not to say to not let them ask you any questions, but have some of your own to balance things out.

When you have questions for the interviewer and you get them talking, they’ll love you for it! People love to talk about themselves and if you can do that you’re scoring huge points and establishing a connection. Believe me, it works.

Some not so obvious examples that will impress the interviewer are:

What sort of staff training is in place here?

How long have you been employed here?

What is the nightly sales record in this bar?

Do you allow low-risk, controlled flair bartending?

What is the turnover like in this establishment?

What’s stopping you from hiring me today?

Will you allow me one unpaid shift to prove myself?

Have Some Class

Avoid doing what so many people out there do, which is only think about themselves.

What do I mean by this?

I’m talking about the kind of person who walks into the interview and starts asking about pay and vacation time right from the get go.

These questions are focused solely on what’s in it for YOU. You don’t want to do that. Show some class and character by asking about those types of things towards the end of the interview.

You should start by asking questions about the actual bartending job and how you can best service THEM as an employee. i.e. What you’ll be required to do for them, what sort of training is in place, how many shifts will you be able to work etc.

I hope that gives you a couple ideas and gets you thinking about what you can do better to score the bartending job of your dreams during the interview.

Public speaking seems to be a problem with most people so it is no surprise that most people spend countless hours preparing for an interview as if they’re going to speak in front of thousand people.

Job interview skills create many new opportunities and put you in control of the interview.

Why is the Interview so Important?

Simply said; if you want the job then you better polish your job interview skills.  The interview is the gateway to having the job offered to you.  If you are confident in your abilities and can vocalize them then you’ll more then likely receive an offer.

How can I prepare for the Interview?

First thing is to make sure you are well groomed.  It’s ok to dress up in a dark suit and matching tie for men or a nice dark business suit for women.  Men should be clean shaven with a neat hair cut.  Women should have their hair neat and also wear stockings and matching shoes.  Heals are ok but not to the point where the woman seems awkward walking in them.  Another thing you can do is practice what you are going to say to the interviewer in front of a mirror or other people.

Other Interview Techniques

Always shake the interviewer’s hand firmly, sit straight up, and pay attention.  Always make sure to answer the interviewer’s questions accurately and concisely.  It is a good idea to study about the company’s history and current events just in case there is a mention of it.  Always be prepared and do not let your eyes wander around the room.  Do not bite your fingernails or show any signs of outward nervousness.  The interviewer will read your body language and even though body language doesn’t show your ability to perform a job, the interviewer will still take it into consideration.    

10 Questions an Interviewer May Ask

1.    What is your greatest strength?

2.    What is your greatest weakness?

3.    Why did you leave your last job?

4.    What did you like most about your last job?

5.    What did you like least about your last job?

6.    How did you solve a problem regarding an angry or dissatisfied customer?

7.    How do you handle stress?

8.    What would your previous co-workers say about you?

9.    Give an example of your ability to make decisions under pressure.

10.     Why do you want to work for this company?

There are many variations on the above questions but most of these are pretty standard.  Of course, work experience is a given and some employers want to know if you smoke.  Often, employers ask questions they are not supposed to ask but it is usually career suicide if you bring up that fact.

Remember to continue to develop your job interview skills

The best thing you can do to prepare yourself for any interview is to find out everything you can about the company you are applying for.  In addition, make sure you have all the dates clear as to where you worked and how long you worked there.  Even if you have already sent a resume take one to the interview with you so that you can glance at it if you need to.  Above all, be on time and be prepared!

The job interview is one of the most important aspects of landing the job you want, and good job interview technique is essential. It can often make or break your chances of getting the position you’ve always wanted. With so many people who may also be vying for a position these days, the fact that you were even called in says a lot about you. However, making a good first impression with the boss or person who does the hiring is just as important. Here are some practical tips to help your interview go smoothly, and raise your chances of being hired.

The first thing you need to do is make sure that you are familiar with the company. Doing some research ahead of time can help you greatly. Know what they stand for, what they do, and some of the aspects of the position you are being interviewed for.

You should always bring in important information that they would need in order to hire you. Identification, social security card, as well as certificates or credentials for any other specialized training. Sure you may have included this information on your resume, but a lot of employers want to look at documentation. For an example, if you are trying for a position as a fork lift operator, or some other heavy machinery, you operator’s license is something you are going to need to bring in to prove that you really know how to run a forklift, or operate a dangerous piece of equipment. Anything you can think of that relates to this should also be included.

Now while all of this is important, one of the biggest aspects of the job interview process is how you speak and how you look. If you are some one who is used to using foul language or making jokes, never do this at a job interview. If the person interviewing you starts making jokes or swearing, this could be a test. It is better to be safe, then sorry. Communicate well, speak in clear, easy to understand sentences, and stay on point. You also need your conversation to flow; don’t just be robotic about it.

Here are some really important tips about your appearance. You need to imagine yourself in the position of the employer. What are they going to look for in your appearance? Men should either be clean shaven, if it is a professional position, or have any facial hair neat and trimmed. Your hair should be clean and neatly worn. Your attire should say to the person hiring you that you are ready to walk out the door and onto the job right away. If you are looking for a working position, like an industrial worker, you should be wearing clothes that are appropriate. If you are going to be working in an office, a suit and tie is considered appropriate, and these should be neatly pressed.

For women: Do not wear much make up; wear just enough to accent your features. Hair should be casually worn, but not too fancy. Not a lot of jewelry or accessories are needed. You can wear either a dress or a women’s business suit. Do not have an open blouse that reveals too much cleavage. You also don’t have to have your blouse buttoned all the way up to the neck either.
